Fatherhood and the Unmarried Adolescent African-American Male Essay

Just about a quarter of all children are now born out of wedlock.... Add to that the substantial fraction of children born into marriages that will not survive.... What do these high rates of marital instability imply for patterns of childbearing, and especially for fathers’ involvement with their children? (Furstenberg & Harris, 1992, p. 199) The vast amount of research on the topic of adolescent pregnancies has historically focused on the female (such as Furstenberg, 1976 and Stack, 1974). Social scientists have tried to understand the problem and also help the adolescent mother following her decision to give birth to a child. In some places, such as Oakland, California, 73% of adolescents giving birth are African American (Smith, 1988, p.269; Massey, 1991, p. 117). With this in mind, social workers have spent most of their efforts helping adolescent African-American women. The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and Aid to Families of Dependent Children (AFDC) offer help for many women and their children. Unfortunately, the social workers usually â€Å"viewed Black adolescent fathers either as a cause of the problem of adolescent parenthood or as a partial solution in their assigned role of financial provider† (Smith, 1988, p. 269). I conducted a brief analysis on Kraft Foods and Hansen’s Natural, to compare and evaluate the ways in which the concept of globalization has made an impact in their individual tactics globally. Kraft Foods and Hansen’s Natural are two similar corporations with dissimilar ways of operations. They operate differently in structure, accessibility, size, strategy, and international marketing. They both share the similarity of working in the food industry. Hansen’s goods are not as broad as Kraft Food’s. Their products are restricted to the beverage sector, while Kraft Food’s products are featured in both beverages and food sectors. Therefore, Hansen’s has not been as dominant as Kraft Foods internationally. Kraft Foods is a renowned American confectionery, food and beverage, independent public company. It markets many brands in more than 155 countries where 40 of the brands are at least a century old and 12 of the brands, annually, profit over a billion dollars worldwide. Kraft Foods employs 140,000 diverse employees; conversely their website depicts the notion of their inspiration to be the consumer. Their website states â€Å"Consumers Inspire Us. † The company upholds a solid market position in the United States while simultaneously making lucrative strides in Europe. Due to the fact that Kraft Foods has 49% of its market share in North America and the remaining 51% in Europe and other areas, they are able to use such diversity to their advantage. Kraft advertises as an international company and has websites in various languages to compensate an extensive selection of market, while keeping everything is simple. They employ the internet to persistently use online surveys and other PR approaches for public feedback analysis to further identify consumer concerns in regards to foods and beverages. Kraft Foods is a leader in viable expansion as they endorse sustainable farm work on ecological policy, environmental change and animal well-being. In recent news, I read that Kraft is talking with Apple regarding an application on the I-Phone, which provides digital assistance from Kraft so that, while grocery shopping, customers can access recipes that list necessary ingredients from Kraft as well as other great food ideas. The I-Phone is enormous globally, so this alone has put Kraft even further ahead of their competition. Kraft even has implemented its on system of checks and balances for quality control which can differ from one country to another for everything such as tastes, textures, elements, and nutrients but overall quality is standardized. Hansen’s Natural Inc. was established in Southern California in 1985. The mission of Hansen Beverage Company is to satisfy consumers’ needs for superior quality and great tasting, healthy, natural and functional beverages. Hansen’s is known for their various alliances with Coca Cola and Anheiser Bush has landed their company’s global distribution into Canada, Mexico, and Western Europe. Hansen’s relies on its partnership with the distributors to deal with globalization for their company. Till present day, Hansen’s Natural is a local company. They don’t actively participate in global enhancing projects and they are slightly involved in global marketing and world trade; however the company strives towards constant development and growth. Hansen’s Natural has modified their natural products to many other types of drinks, including the energy drink, â€Å"Monster. † Awkwardly, the energy drinks are questionable as a â€Å"natural† product. Hansen’s edge through focusing within the specific market of beverages gives them a more concentrated and direct method to servicing the world. This enables their buyers to find them through increased activity in the extreme sports world. Hansen’s Natural’s launch of the energy drink, Monster has helped boost their company sales globally. In conclusion, it is clear that when comparing globalization within small and large corporations the one major difference between the two corporate philosophies is specialization vs. broad range appeal. Kraft Foods & Hansen’s both appear to encourage and place emphasis on their relationship with their consumers. It is significant that both companies are successful globally because of their status as a small or large company. Both companies are successful in how they progress with technology advancing while never overlooking the consumer. Hence each company is raising the opinion that their corporate culture is driven by the customer need wherever they conduct their business. In reference to the globalization theory, Hansen’s Natural has prospered in marketing its products in the global market because they don’t have a great deal of socio-economic or political resources. In reference to the globalization theory Kraft uses viable development to assist in shaping its complete affiliation to the global market.

North Korea is located in southeastern Asia on the northern part of the Korean peninsula. It is known worldwide as having an oppressive regime. The country is controlled by the ruling family and punishments are severe. Its history has had a clear effect upon the nation. Other nations have tried, to no avail, to learn what goes on in North Korea and how to handle the North Korean problem. However, these other countries have been going about the process in the wrong manner. The road to solving the North Korean problem needs to be solidly paved before it can be trod upon. To add to the diverse roles of women in Gilgamesh, Shamhat, a priestess of Ishtar, is the woman who is responsible for the civilization of Enkidu, a key event in providing Gilgamesh with a reason to embark on his quest for immortality. Shamhat’s role in the epic is significant because she is the character who prepares Enkidu to meet and become Gilgamesh’s companion: He tried to catch up, but his body was exhausted, his life-force was spent, his knees trembled he could no longer run like an animal, as he had run before. He turned back to Shamhat, and as he walked, he knew that his mind had somehow grown larger, he knew things now than an animal can’t know. (Mitchell 79) After Shamhat performs her love-arts with Enkidu, it is evident that he is much weaker and no longer able to run wild with the animals, however, he has grown in mind. This exposes the true extent of the power of women, and how women can transform a man, stripping the wildness away, and introducing the humanity and civilization of humans. In the poem, â€Å"Base Details,† Siegfried Sassoon expresses his great disgust towards the majors in the military. He is disgusted and appalled at the way the majors act while men are dying out in the battlefield. Sassoon is angered by the fact that the majors are living a life of luxury while sending young men â€Å"up the line† out into the battlefield. The poem is about morally vile majors at a base and the lowly assignments they give their men. Sassoon begins the poem by describing the majors as demanding, mean, and cowardly men. They are bald, out-of-shape and full of gluttony. Sassoon calls the majors as â€Å"scarlet majors,† signifying that they are shameful and morally apprehensible. Their faces have a bright redness from excessive drinking, eating, and yelling of anger. Scarlet† also represents the blood these majors have on their hands from speeding â€Å"glum heroes up the line to death† because they are willing to pick fights but won’t fight them. The majors â€Å"speed† the soldiers to the battlefield, doing it carelessly, demonstrating they don’t care if they die because they see them as replaceable objects. These soldiers are being sent â€Å"up the line to death†, dehumanizing them because these men are in a line waiting for their death while the major are living their luxurious lives away from a war they started.Sassoon is sickened by the fact these men are â€Å"guzzling and gulping in the best hotel† while the soldiers are dying in battle. He describes how disrespectful the majors are with their â€Å"puffy petulant faces† from eating and drinking excessively. Sassoon describes how the majors are drinking and stuffing their faces while â€Å"Reading the Roll of Honor† in safe, luxurious hotels. The Roll of Honor is the list of men who have died in battle, and these majors do not take it seriously.They are reading this list as if it were a newspaper. They are barbaric and arrogant and show no respect for those who have died in battle. The fact that these majors are like that sickens the reader. For this, Sassoon feels so contemptuous towards the majors for they are demanding, but hypocritical. Sassoon uses sarcasm in expressing the major’s speech, â€Å"Poor young chap, I’d say- I used to know his father well. Yes, we’ve lost heavily in this last scrap. † The major refers to these horrific battles as â€Å"scraps. He does not care about the soldiers in these battles because he does not know how horrific these battles are. Sassoon uses the expression â€Å"youth stone dead† to show that casualties are high and an entire generation is lost during this war. It also represents how those who survive lose their youth and their innocence. While the soldiers go through all that pain and suffering, the majors would â€Å"toddle safely home and die- in bed. † The majors go back home still drunk and enjoy the money and wealth they have gained and die of old age or other causes.
